Do you need a visa to enter Germany? And if so, how does the application procedure work?

Abolition of the Remonstration Procedure from 1 July 2025

The remonstration procedure which up to now has been granted voluntarily will be abolished from 1 July 2025 worldwide in order to process more visa applications in total as well as to reduce reduce the waiting times for visa decisions.

If your visa application is rejected on or after 1 July 2025, kindly refrain from initiating the remonstration procedure. The Embassy will no longer process remonstration application lodged after this deadline.

In order to appeal against a visa decision, you may take legal action at the competent court in Berlin, Germany (Verwaltungsgericht Berlin). Kindly note that this will have to be done in German and also entails court fees.

It is therefore more important than ever: You can reduce the risk of a rejection by submitting all required documents with your application. In case the visa department requests further documents, please submit these as soon as possible.

It goes without saying that all applications have the option of submitting a new visa application at any time in the case of a rejection.

Visa - Yes or No?

Cambodian nationals require a visa to enter Germany.

EU nationals and nationals of a couple of other states are exempted. You can check here whether you need a visa or not.

If you need a visa, the next question is, which visa type you need to apply for. There are two different types of visa:

Schengen visa or national visa?

The visa type depends on the duration of your intended stay.

Are you planning a short-term stay in Germany for a period of up to 90 days – e. g. for a visit, as a tourist, on business, or for medical treatment – you will need a Schengen visa.

Or do you intend to stay long-term, e. g. to reunite with your family or to study? For stays of more than 90 days, you need to apply for a national visa.

Important notice: The acceptance of all Schengen visa applications is exclusively handled by the external service provider „VFS Global.“ This also applies to applications from family members who wish to apply for a visa under the EU Freedom of Movement Act for non-German EU citizens. The decision on a visa application, however, always remains at the discretion of the visa office of the German Embassy in Phnom Penh. Appointments at VFS Global can be booked quickly and easily via the VFS Global website.
