Voluntary services in Germany for foreigners
General Information
A voluntary service in Germany enables you to get involved in the common good outside of work and school - in the social, ecological and cultural areas or in the area of sports, integration as well as civil and disaster protection.
Information for volunteering in Germany can be found on the following websites:

Please submit the following documents for your application, one original with one copy of each original in paper format A4:
Your valid passport
One print-out of your duly filled and signed application form
Two biometrical passport photos, one of which glued to the application forms
Visa fee 75 Euro, payable in USD
Complete contract / agreement about your volunteer stay in Germany and signed by all parties.
If the contract or the confirmation of the place of assignment does not contain any information about your accommodation and meals, please submit additional proof of livelihood.
Complete tabular curriculum vitae with full addresses and contact information.
- Self-written and signed letter of motivation on your motives, e.g.:
- Why would you like to do voluntary service in Germany?
- Do you already have German language skills or how will you acquire them?
- What would you like to do after the voluntary service and where?
- What benefits do you hope to gain from the voluntary service?
- How does this stay fit into your specific life plan and your professional perspective?
High School diploma, vocational training or university diploma
If you do not master the German language or do not provide proof of language proficiency, please enclose a confirmation from the place of assignment that language skills will initially be waived and you can acquire them through language courses after entry or that they have checked your language skills and found them to be sufficient.
- Proof of health insurance coverage
- Certificate of the German statutory health insurance with indicated confirmation of the validity of the health insurance cover from entry coverage from the date of entry
- OR a certificate from a private health insurance company with indicated confirmation of the validity of the health insurance coverage from the date of entry, if the type and scope of health insurance coverage corresponds to that of a statutory health insurance,
- OR an incoming health insurance, if the type and scope of health insurance coverage corresponds to that of a statutory health insurance and covering the whole duration of your stay.
You must submit your application personally at the German Embassy. Once you have obtained all necessary documents, please register for an appointment here.
Please note:
Incomplete applications will be decided by the Embassy on the basis of the documents that were submitted, and may be rejected.
All parties must sign the volunteer service contracts:
- BFD: The volunteer, the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Tasks (BAFzA) as well as the place of assignment, the central office and, if applicable, the agency that carries out the voluntary service (Träger) must sign the contract.
- FSJ and FÖJ: The volunteer, the agency that carries out the voluntary service and, if applicable, the place of assignment must sign the contract.
- Weltwärts Süd-Nord: The volunteer, the BAFzA, the place of assignment, the central office and the agency that carries out the voluntary service must sign the contract.
Foreign documents which were neither issued in Cambodia nor in Germany must be legalized or have an apostille.
Documents which are not in German or English language need to be translated by a recognized translator. For details, please see here.
