Germany is currently funding about 40 regional programmes in Asia with total commitments of approximately 40 million EUR per year. About 20 of these programmes include activities in Cambodia or have indirect benefits for Cambodia. Areas of work are grouped around
(1) Environment / Climate Change (including support to the Mekong River Commission) and (2) Regional Economic Integration and Cooperation.
The Cambodian Rectangular Strategy for Growth focusses on the development of the private sector where the garment export industry plays a major role. Labour and Social Standards are in the interest of all stakeholders and a necessity for the global supply chain and trade relations. Building up on a 15 years’ experience of the ILO Better Facotries Cambodia, the German Technical Cooperation GIZ is supporting the Cambodian Government in their efforts to reach this goal in a three years programme (until early 2018). Therefore, a continuous dialogue with the business sector as well as the labour sector is essential.
The Labour and Social Standards Programme will work with factories, advise on policies for the national stakeholders and enhance a dialogue on regional level. The regional programme includes Cambodia, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
