Family reunification: Children joining parents

Please make sure that you present all the documents applicable as per the checklist when taking your appointment at the Embassy. Failure to do so may result in our inability to process your application and you having to book a new appointment.

  • Application form (VIDEX) completely filled in and signed
  • Two biometrical passport photos, one of which glued to the application form, not older than 6 months. (strict requirements, see details)
  • Valid national passport
  • Visa fee 37,50 Euro, payable only in cash in USD (fee is waived if your parent has the German or another EU nationality)
  • Child's legalized birth certificate
  • If the child was born within marriage: Legalized marriage certificate
  • If the child was born outside of marriage and you are the child’s father: Proof of your recognition of paternity, mother’s consent to the recognition of paternity and declaration of joint custody. These declarations can be notarized at the German Embassy or in Germany, at the Civil Registrar, the Local Youth Office or any notary public.
  • If parents were married, but the marriage was divorced: Court ruling concerning the divorce
  • If parents were married, but one parent is deceased: Legalized death certificate of the deceased parent
  • If applicable: Proof that a German parent had the German nationality when the child was born: Copy of the German identity card or passport which was valid on the day of the child’s birthPlease note: If child is 16 or 17 years old on the day of submitting the application and a parent is already a resident in Germany: C1 German Certificate from an ALTE-certified language school (Goethe Institut, ÖSD, telc, TestDaF, ECL).

Your application must be submitted personally at the German Embassy. Once you have obtained all necessary documents, please register for an appointment here.

You can also apply for an online application here. Once the online application is complete and pre-checked, you will be able to make an appointment to submit your biometrics and the applications of your family to the embassy.

Please note:

  • In case a document is not written in German or English, it has to be submitted together with notary attested German translation. (list of translators in Cambodia)
  • Please note that the German Missions reserve the right to ask for additional documents or to initiate a further investigation of certificates.
  • As your application will also be forwarded to the competent immigration authorities in Germany, processing will take at least three months. Please be informed that regular status enquiries during the first three months after submission of your application will not be answered.
  • Please ensure that you have family health cover through your spouse. Until health coverage has been established it is recommended to take out a travel health insurance.

Submission of the above-mentioned documents does not guarantee that a visa will be granted.
